Some Ice Breakers
By: Sean Buvala

Here are a few icebreakers from our files. Some of you "seasoned pros" may have played variations on these before, or maybe there’s something brand new here for you "newbies." Enjoy.

1. Anatomy Shuffle.
Players find a partner to join with when a particular body part combination is mentioned. For example, if the leader calls “finger-ear” every person in the group must find one partner and make the connection- one finger must be touching one ear. The partners only need to make ONE connection between the two parts. Also, partners stay together until the next combination is called. When the next match is called, people must find someone with whom they have NOT yet been a partner with.

Some suggestions for matches are: finger to nose, ear to ear, head to head, hand to forehead, finger to ear, knee to nose (remember just one link), toes to toes, etc.

2. Old Plug
You’ll need a beach ball (or two or three) for this game. Participants gather in a large circle. Select three (or four or five) people to be the team in the center. The three people stand in a line together, facing the same direction. Members two and three place their hands on the shoulders of the person in front of them. You now have a mini “conga” line (“plug”) in the center of the large circle of people.

The object of the game is for the people in the circle to get into the center, the “plug," of the group. Players who make up the circle throw the ball at the last person in the “plug” line. If a circle person hits the last person in the “plug” line, the target, that circle person now goes to the front of the “plug” and the one who was hit goes out to join the large circle. In other words, the person who threw the ball becomes number one in the “plug” line, ex-number one becomes number two, number two becomes three and so on. The person who is now at the end of the “plug” becomes the new target of the ball throwers. The number of players in the “plug” remains the same.

Add more beach balls to the game to pick up the pace. The three people who are in the “plug” at the end of the game are the “Winners,” whatever winners means.

3. Legs Relay
We usually play this game with same gender teams. Teams line up in typical relay style, in one long line, one behind the other, all facing the same direction.

When the signal is given to begin, the person who is first in line (“A”) , turns around, drops to their hands and knees and crawls through the legs of all the members of the team behind them. In other words, the team behind them forms a tunnel with their legs. When the “A” gets all the way through, “A” joins the end of the line. Then the next person, who is now in front of the line, drops to their hands and knees and repeats the process. This is done until everyone has crawled through the tunnel of legs and the “A” is back in the front of the line. “Best two out of three” competition is usually enough to wear out even the most jumpy group of Junior High students.
