"A and F" Madness or "Why is there a Naked Guy in My Mailbox?"
By: Sean Buvala

* A note Sean shared with members of my youth ministry program recently....This note, in style and grammar is written for high school teens.**

Got my "A and F" clothing store 15% discount post card in the mail today. Oh, goodie.

There is a guy on there who is pretty much naked but yet he is trying to sell CLOTHING.

Yeah, laugh all you want but subtle sex like this sells to *both* sexes: girls like the look and guys wish they could look like this- even if on a sub conscious level. Hooray air brushing! Sex sells regardless of gender..that’s why they put a guy on the card. They know what they are doing.

Wait, maybe I am wrong about that naked stuff. Getting out my magnifying glass, I look closely. Maybe he is trying to model the sliver of boxer shorts that I can see. Aren’t you a little old to be sagging there, brother boy naked guy?

Okay, I’ll jump through the hoop. I went to the "A and F" site and shopped for underwear...$14.50 for ONE pair of underwear, but wait, I can use my 15% discount postcard, because "A and F" loves me, with the mostly naked guy in the front and then the one pair of underwear only costs $12.32...sheesh....

Now, I can go to Target and get a whole darn pack of underwear, yes that’s three whole pair, for about $8.00. Okay, I will save myself almost $13.50 on three pair.....and unless you are really desperate to know, you would never suspect that I was wearing "Tarjay" underwear instead of "A and F," now would you? Sorry, I don’t sag, so you can’t read my waistbands.

Sheesh. We have homeless people downtown at Andre House (a homeless shelter) who don’t even have underwear unless somebody donates it. Wow, in my experiment, I can buy three pair of underwear (boxers or briefs) and still have enough money left over to buy another package and donate it to Andre House. Then, maybe, some homeless guy can actually have underwear and maybe some dignity for a moment ’cuz he has underwear like normal people.

Go on, buy inexpensive underwear this year and buy extra (small and medium) to give to Andre House. It will be good for you.

Okay, besides the whole paying too much for naked, shaved chest guys to sell me underwear, I have another issue here:

Man, I am getting tired of what advertisers, cable, MTV, fashion companies, tobacco and alcohol purveyors are trying to do to you. Let’s do some guerrilla actions of our own. God wants so much more of you than to be consumer sheep so someone can assault you for your adolescent money. They are playing off your sexual/body fears and desires to sell you overpriced clothing or music or beer or soda pop. Whatever.

I am sending my A and F card back to the company with a post card of my own. Just haven’t decide what is on it yet...anyone want to help me?

Go dig around one of my favorite anti-advertisement sites at Adbusters.org. Here is a page of some of the guerrilla ways to make people think. The whole site is good.

I think this is my "advertising awareness for teens" year. Anybody want to share ideas with me? Let’s do something.
